Beware of "Cherry picking"
Mis- and dis-information comes in many shapes, sizes, formats and themes. Sometimes it can be a video, an audio clip or a picture with text on it. You may see it on a social network, receive it on a messaging app or discover it on a video streaming platform.
Even if it's not what you wanted to seek out, it can reach you in many ways. And it's not always political. It can be about health, financial scams, science, climate and environment, international relations, government schemes and advisories, crime, entertainment and sports among many others.
Misinformation is harmful and can have a negative impact on society causing chaos and problems. It can also impact our actions regarding the environment. Take this video for example.
This is a hoax, and you will find many of these online. It may be hard to fact check everything you see, but knowing the technique employed by those who want to deceive or mislead you can help you stay alert and safe. In this case, over 97% scientists agree that climate change is real and human caused. You could see claims that indulge in “cherry picking”, where someone online posts only a small piece of the puzzle instead of showing the whole picture.
